3rd Grade Poster Contest
In the Spring Licking SWCD hosts a 3rd grade poster contest that corresponds to Earth Day!
Annie Lunsford and Mariah Witzberger, both students at Stevenson Elementary in Heath, were choosen as the winners of the 2008 Licking County Third Grade Environmental Poster Contest. Lunsford earned first-place honors with her “Water Is Life” poster. She received an educational gift certificate, pizza party for her class, and a framed copy of the poster.
Witzberger earned second-place honors. She received a certificate, an ice cream sandwich party for her class, and a framed copy of the poster. The top winner will also be recognized at the District Annual Meeting in November.
More than 150 Licking County third graders entered the poster contest sponsored by the District. This year’s theme “Water is Life,” reminds citizens about our natural resources, in particularly the importance of water. Water is an essential part of life!
Today, there is an ever-growing concern about water quality and an even bigger increasing demand on our water resources. We can all help conserve and restore our valuable water resources by utalizing rain barrels and rain gardens, fixing leaky water fixtures in the house and by following the lawn and garden tips found in the summer issue of Conservation Notes.
Envirothon
Congratulations to Granville!
The Envirothon is an annual competition held in May in which the area high school teams, consisting of five students, compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science, conservation and natural resource management. The teams exercise their training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue.
The Granville High School Team placed second in the Area III Envirothon competition held May 7, 2008 at Shadow Lake Campground in Monroe County, and placed eighth at the state contest held at Urbana University, Urbana, Ohio June 8-10.
The Team of Dillon Clouse, Cory Becher, Cody Hall, Scott Comisford and Zach Prouty was coached by Jim Reading.
