Conservation District honored at Green Gala
October 25, 2011
Newark - Licking County Soil & Water Conservation District was recognized at the Ohio Environmental Council’s annual Green Gala. The District received an honorable mention for its outstanding commitment to and work for environmental protection in Ohio. The event was held Saturday in Columbus.
“The District was both surprised and thrilled to receive recognition” said Jim Kiracofe, District Program Administrator. “It reaffirms for us that even in this economically and politically challenging climate, it is still important to manage our natural resources responsibly.” Kiracofe, LCSWCD Board Chair, Deb Walton, and Administrative Assistant, Sherri Velliquette-Hilligas, attended the event.
For over 67 years, the District has promoted conservation and assisted landowners in implementing best management practices. These practices have helped provide safe, locally-grown, abundant food, cleaner water in streams and rivers, and a healthier and more diverse environment.
The District was nominated for its outreach efforts and for promoting green initiatives that make a difference in the lives of people in the community.
Since 2009, the District has sold over 700 rain barrels, held nine rain barrel construction workshops and installed nine rain gardens. Rain barrels and gardens help keep stormwater onsite which reduces downstream flooding, recharges underground aquifers and improves water quality.
Other outreach initiatives included promoting conservation at community events, revitalizing the Licking River Round-up, an annual trash clean up and celebration, and promoting Earth Day and Arbor Day by distributing 14,000 individually-wrapped seedling trees to elementary students.
