Deeds Farm Preserved in Licking County
December 27, 2011
The William Edward Deeds Farm, 254 acres on Deeds Road in Union Township, was permanently protected in December through an agricultural easement purchase with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The easement will limit the land to agricultural use in perpetuity.
The District, as the Local Sponsor, will co-hold the easment with ODA and monitor the farm annually to ensure that it remains in agricultural use. Local sponsors also submit and complete applications on behalf of landowners, assist with the easement closing process and provide information on conservation options.
Also known as Locust Shade Farm, the Deeds farm was founded by Andrew Deeds, great-grandfather of W. Edward Deeds. The farm was included in the District’s 2008 Licking County Century Farms book.
Locust Shade is near the Licking Park District’s Infirmary Mound Park.
“We want to express our deep gratitude to the voters of the State of Ohio for supporting this program (Clean Ohio) and to the staff at ODA and LCSWCD for their invaluable assistance, without which we could never have successfully completed this process” said Edward’s daughter, Amy Deeds.
“I hope that more farmers in Licking County will have this same opportunity. It's not about preserving the past; it's about protecting the future” said Amy Deeds.
