Invasive Species

What Does ‘Invasive’ Mean?

Many people have heard about the Asian carp threat to the Great Lakes and the Emerald Ash Borer destroying Ash trees.  Other insects, wildlife, plants and diseases also threaten natural resources, agriculture, fishing, and timber industries.  Understanding how and why certain organisms pose threats is the first step to helping prevent the introduction or spread of invasive species.

The National Invasive Species Council defines an invasive species as one that “is both non-native (and alien) to the ecosystem … and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm, or harm to human health."
